Terrarium Workshop: Living Landscapes

Some workshops are about learning a new skill. Others give you permission to slow down, work with your hands, and see where a little creativity takes you. Our Terrarium Workshop did all three.

Under Michelle’s easy-going guidance, 20 people gathered on the hill for an afternoon of soil, stone, plants, and slow creativity. We learned how to layer drainage stone, charcoal, soil, and moss, how to choose and place plants, and, most importantly, how to create a tiny ecosystem designed to thrive long after the afternoon was over.

And then everyone made it their own.

Twenty people started with essentially the same materials, yet somehow we ended up with 20 completely different living landscapes. Some were lush and wild, others carefully composed and almost architectural. Each one reflected the person who made it, which may have been my favorite part of the day.

Since the workshop, we’ve received so many follow-ups from people telling us that their terrariums are still thriving. There is something especially satisfying about knowing that what was created together that afternoon is still growing in homes months later.

Michelle made the entire process feel approachable and relaxed, giving everyone enough instruction to understand what they were doing while leaving plenty of room to experiment.

It was another reminder of why we love bringing experiences like this to the hill. Sometimes gathering around the table means food and wine. Sometimes it means dirt under your fingernails, a glass vessel filled with something green, and a few hours spent learning, making, talking, and creating together.
