Artist Statement
Figure drawing, also referred to as “life drawing”, is considered a foundation skill for classically trained artists. I completed an undergraduate minor in art illustration focused primarily on figures. The subject offers continuous study of form and light, which change with every model as well as with each pose the model chooses. Because of its everchanging nature, I continue to include figures in my art practice. As a biologist, my love of anatomy further adds to this appreciation.
For figures, I prefer the speed of sketching rather than painting. While warm-up poses may be as brief as 5 minutes, longer poses require rest breaks after 20-30 minutes and the repositioning of the model may not faithfully replicate every angle and shadow. Sketching with charcoal or graphite often allows me to complete the piece in a single sitting. Quickly capturing both the shape and the light/shadows is a practice that enhances all of my art projects, particularly when working on-site en plein air. Sketches and drawings are an essential starting point for most artistic mediums yet I have always enjoyed them as artistic works in their own right; sometimes more so than “finished works”.
